There's a storm in my teacup!

Well, in my dollar store mug.

Our First Big Debt
Jamie and I have just put down a deposit of $3,500 towards a shiny new car Autumn can now use to drive us around in, and when we learn to drive, we get to drive it too.

It's a brand new silver Kia Spectra, and while it won't be fully paid off until 2010 and while it wasn't the car we set out to buy, and it was more than we intended to pay for a car, it's a nicer first car than I ever expected to be able to drive, and it's not nearly as stressful as I expected the process could be.

See, this is the trouble with being tight regarding big purchases. You start to wonder if it was the right decision, well after you can't change things. As I sat in the waiting room while Jamie and Autumn completed many forms, adverts for new Hondas and Toyotas were cropping up, where their payments per month would be less than ours ended up being, with a similar warranty and a 'better' car, in terms of brand name alone.

But seeing I haven't even driven yet, all I know is that this purchase makes me want to drive very soon. And I feel very sorry for Tacoma when that happens. So long as I don't start to drive on the other side of the road - I don't think I'd want to pick up that British habit.

Still a thousand other things to do to settle in. Tomorrow's another day to try to get some of them out of the way.

congrats on the new baby! i know it seems like a ton of cash to put down, but in the longrun it's worth it...and if everyone's chipping in, then it's that much cheaper :D

i think you guys will def enjoy the car!

Oh god, I know the feeling. The first car I bought on my own was a New Beetle. I was so sure I'd made a mistake that I went home and cried in a fetal position for an hour (turns out it was a very big mistake, but that's a very long story). I think car-buying is secondary only to house-buying and possibly having a baby on the list of life's biggest stresses. Hope it works out for you.
